The Burt Lake (Cheboiganing) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is a Native American community whose traditional homelands are in the Indian (“Colonial”) Point area near Burt Lake, Michigan. The tribe signed treaties with the federal government in 1836 and 1855 and had a village located near the shores of Burt Lake. In October 1900, the village was destroyed by arson in a fraudulent land grab. Today, the Burt Lake Band operates as a 501c3 non-profit organization and State of Michigan Historic Tribe offering language, social, economic and environmental services to our tribal members as finding and staffing permit. The Burt Lake Band has been petitioning the U.S. federal government for reaffirmation of our tribal status as a sovereign Indian Tribe for many generations. Donations to the Burt Lake Band are tax-deductible.
