Meet Our Tribal Council Members


CURTIS P. CHAMBERS~~Tribal Chair
Re-elected: 2008

Our current Chairman, Curtis Chambers was re-elected on August 9, 2008. He is married to Jane and they have three sons. Curtis is also the Harbormaster of Cheboygan County Marina and a devout Catholic.

His hobbies include running and hunting.

Curtis’s first priority for the Burt Lake Band is to be federally recognized. His second goal is to provide housing and health care to Burt Lake Band members. He also believes that diversity in business is a necessity to help move the tribe into the future.

AUGUSTINE KIOGIMA, JR.~~Vice Chair
First Elected: 1995

Augustine has been a GM employee for the past 25 years. He resides in Grand Rapids and has served on Tribal Council in various capacities since 1995. He is dedicated to helping the Burt Lake Band achieve federal recognition.

DAVID MASSEY~~Treasurer
Elected: 2004

Aanii! David Massey n’dizhinkaaz. Brutusing n’doonjibaa. I was born at Burt Lake, grandson of Peter Shaw-wan-naw-se-gay and Christine Mick-se-min-ne. I attended Father Flanagan’s Boys home in Omaha, Nebraska. I graduated in 1970 and returned to Burt Lake. I then moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1977 and began working construction as a laborer and moved back to Michigan in 1984 to work for H & D Construction of Petoskey until 2002. I am currently working at the Little Traverse Bay Band. I have been a member of Laborers International Union for 24 years. I received my certificate of Proficiency Waganakising Odawa Business Technology Training Program on May 13, 2005.

My hobbies include taking care of my grandchildren.

I would like to see the younger generations get more politically involved with the tribe. They are our future. Our tribe is in need of health care, housing and economic development. I would also like to see the Burt Lake Band get federal recognition this year.

HANK PARKEY~~Trustee 1

My name is Hank Parkey and I've served the tribe since 2005 on the Tribal Council. Currently, I live in Kalkaska with my wife, Tina and son, David.

A few of my hobbies include fishing, gathering and woodcarving.

My goal, first and foremost, is see us through the affirmation of our tribe. Secondly, I am striving to regenerate traditions, including language and spiritual customs. I am also committed to creating programs for our Elders, and providing health care to all members, housing for the elders of the tribe and young families, and education programs for our youth to help maintain the history of the Burt Lake Band.

KEN PARKEY, SR.~~Trustee 2
Re-elected: 2008

Kenny was born in Petoskey MI in 1944. He graduated from Pellston High School in 1960. Following graduation he moved to Lansing Michigan to work for the city parks Recreation and city zoos. In the latter 1960’s, he moved back home with his family and worked in carpentry for a local business man. He has now been working for a family about twenty five years or more as their care taker. His main goal is for the Band to be reaffirmed in its federal recognition and to obtain proper health care for all members.

ROY PARKEY, JR.~~Trustee 3
Re-elected: 2008

Roy has lived on Indian Road his whole life, he went to school at Pellston Schools from Kindergarten to Graduation. He’s currently working for Tim's Limbs Tree Services in Harbor Springs, as well as being a volunteer for the Pellston Fire Department. He would like to see Burt Lake Band become reinstated as a Federally Recognized Tribe, thus granting the members better health and well being benefits. He would also like to see more activities for the membership, especially child activity centers.

SARAH SHENOSKEY-HOLMES~~Trustee 4
Appointed: 2008

Sarah is the mother of two. She is dedicated to helping the tribe achieve federal recognition and health care services. Sarah would also like to see a Cultural Center built, especially for all the children.
